LAW & ETHICS

The primary role of journalism is to hold people in power accountable, to ask the tough questions that enact change and to pursue the truth. With this noble cause comes a degree of responsibility. It is imperative that journalist act with the understanding that issues impact real people, and improper reporting can irreversibly damage the reputation of a person.

By the same token, a journalist should not shy away when there is a truth that must be revealed, despite the inconvenience it may cause. Journalists have the distinguished privilege of impacting real change. This incredible ability entails a supreme degree of responsibility, and it is imperative that journalists act accordingly.

In the opinion section, there is room to stray from hard news story and express individual opinions. However, it may not always be appropriate to express your unfiltered opinion. And in the instances where it is appropriate to express your opinion, you need to have sufficient information to reinforce your opinion and the logic behind it.
