LEADERSHIP

Last year as editor-in-chief of The Bear Facts, I held the first journalism interest meeting. My co-editors and I hosted all students, from seventh grade to 12th, who were interested in contributing to the newspaper. This meeting is pivotal to the success of the newspaper because having more contributors allows for more coverage of our Saint Joseph community.

I had the challenging task last year of leading an understaffed group. We had three full-time members of the newspaper staff, including myself. I had to organize a sports and news section, writing a majority of the stories on my own. My co-editors and I lay out 10 pages and edit them by ourselves.

I had to get some of my writers out of there comfort zone and write for sections that don't exactly come naturally for them. One such writer is Andrew Sanli, who worked mostly with the broadcast class. After working with him, I was able to hone in his sports writing, and he actually won Honorable Mention for Best Sports Story from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association this fall.

In the spring of 2019, after problems with printing our newspaper at different locations across the state, we made the decision to stop printing and turn The Bear Facts into an online
newspaper. Instead of waiting eight weeks to publish a newspaper, the online newspaper has allowed us to write and post stories immediately. I helped design the look of the site.

Then, after serving as editor, I stepped back from that role this year but continued to write news stories and work in broadcast productions.
