SPORTS JOURNALISM

Sports has been a passion of mine from a young age. I am thoroughly knowledgeable about sports, so conveying that knowledge to readers comes easily. I write about sports, but I also play them. I am on the varsity football and baseball teams.

In my role as sports editor, I covered three years worth of sports, including four football playoff games, a baseball state championship, and two Elite 8 basketball tournaments, where I acquired press credentials and sat in the press section and covered the game.

My best work has been in profiling the athletes on the field, and looking in depth at their story on and off the field, trying to uncover what makes them the athlete that they are. Here are several samples of my work.

SPORTS COLUMN: GERARD MCCALL
This is the column that won second place for Best Sports Commentary in 2018 from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. The story picks up when Gerard McCall, a minor league baseball player, gets released from his minor league team. He ultimately ended up at St. Joe as baseball coach. Click here to read the full story.

SPORTS COLUMN: TREY FRIERSON
This column chronicles the journey of high school athlete Trey Frierson and uncovers his motivation for achieving excellence on the field: the death of his mother. This piece won first place in Best Sports Commentary from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association and Best Column from the Mississippi Scholastic Press Association. Click here to read the full story.

SPORTS COLUMN: GABE BLAYLOCK
This is my most recent story, from the fall of 2018. This column profiles Gabe Blaylock, a state championship swimmer, and his biggest fan: his little brother Finn, who is fighting a  rare form of cancer. Click here to read the full story.

SPORTS STORY: FIRST GAME VICTORY
This news story covers the first football game of the season, where Head Coach John Bond leads the team to a win in the first game of the season. Some people questioned Bond's abilities as a coach despite his legendary success at Mississippi State University in the 1980s. Click here to read the full story.

SPORTS STORY: BRUINS IN PLAYOFFS
Here, I cover the Bruin football, where a team of 25 players makes the playoffs against all odds. Click here to read the full story.
